We had a long metal pole in the boathouse and our slip was constructed from steel. The sound of metal on metal could make quite a racket, so it seemed like a good option. One of the crew was nominated to be noise-maker. As they approached the top of the slip, we took the RSPCA’s advice on board and gave our siren a short, sharp blip.

Sure enough, Wally’s big head tilted towards the sound.

The crew member took a few steps down the slip and Wally seemed to notice him but didn’t seem alarmed. Next, the crew member took the pole and dragged it across the steelworks of the slip, as a way of ‘shooing’ him away.

A scraping, clanging sound rang through the air and the vibrations travelled along the tracks that Wally was flopped across. His head twisted quizzically again and then with a loud grunt he flipped onto his front and waddled a little, before dropping into the sea.

It worked!

‘Well done!’ I called to the crew member.

But three minutes later, he was back on the slip.

It was good to have a solution we knew worked in the bag, but it was still a big worry. Over the next few days the crew and I were in constant contact over the ‘walrus situation’.
